For my Language Arts reflection I have chose my essay about advertising. I had to think like an essayist. Essayists think about their world and have opinions about what they observe which led me to write about advertising. I have observed about how they advertised and what tricks they have used to persuade the consumer. Essayists also try to stick to the main idea and try to write at least five paragraphs in the essay. Like an essayist I wrote five paragraphs about what tricks I have observed that companies and franchises use so we can buy them. They also need to have an introductory paragraph which includes a thesis statement that clearly states the writer’s position. My thesis statement that clearly stated my opinion was that “Advertisers use persuasive techniques to trick you into buying their products.” Try to make each paragraph stick to the main idea of the five paragraph essay.

Essayists have three reasons or proof to support their thesis statement. I did this by explaining a type of persuasive trick was hidden in commercials. The proof that they did this was in the movie the Other Guys. They put in Jersey Boys, the Lakers, and the baseball team the Yankees. Essayists make sure that for each reason/proof paragraph has a topic sentence. Also that each paragraph has at least three supporting sentences that relates to the topic sentence of each paragraph. For each paragraph with reason/proof includes approximate examples, details, and other evidence to support the writer’s argument.

Something that all essayists use is called the successful paragraph method. This is to help with sentence variety throughout your piece. The concluding paragraph is always has to restate the thesis without being repetitive. Last but not least they have to always edit their piece.

The thing I liked about the essay about advertising was that it exposed what advertisers, and how they try to make you buy their product. Another thing I liked about my piece was that I had a clear conclusion.

I would change the introduction. I didn’t like the introduction because it sounded deceptive to advertisers. Another thing I did not like was I asked too many questions. I did not like this because it sounded like an investigation more than an essay.

Advertisers are very tricky! They put ads everywhere hoping to take your money, by selling something that is probably garbage. They use persuasive techniques to trick you into buying their products. Buying the products is not a good idea since they are not like they seem; that’s why they try to trick you into buying their bad products. You will see them every where: in the movies, billboards, posters, commercials, on the radio and especially malls.
When you watch movies do you see a certain brand or product that the actor is eating or using or in video games where a character might eat, talk or play? Well if you seen these, they are called hidden commercials. Hidden commercials are when they hide a product or brand in a popular movie or video game. They might seem like they were put there by accident but companies pay for their product to be movies. Putting it where a lot of people will see it is a good idea because then people will think about buying it. For example, a Ninja Turtle game, the enemies hide behind Pizza Hut signs and ambush the turtles. Also they have it in modern warfare; if you go up to a big screen TV they show Xbox games and the original Xbox. This is a big one, movies! In the movie The Other Guys they put Jersey Boys, Lakers, and the Yankees. Hidden commercials are almost everywhere.
A sound effect is another scheme to take your money. To use sound affects makes the product sound or look more appealing than it really is. They hire professionals to make sounds instead of trying the real thing. After they make the sounds, they fit it into the video so it sounds like the real thing. For example they’d punch a frozen turkey for a GI Joe commercial to make it sound like the action figures were really punching each other. Also they use a broom to make a “swoosh” sound to make roller skates sound fast even though their not. The last one would be that they crunch leaves to make chips sound crunchy. This technique can make a lot of things sound more appealing than they actually are, so watch out.
Do you ever buy the cereal just for the prizes? Well some people do and this is another technique used by advertisers. Putting prizes in the cereal box make kids want to buy it because they think its going to be fun to play with or make them cooler. What do you think you really get a cool toy? Well if you thought it was a cool toy your wrong, all you get is a tiny trinket that is really garbage. For example Corn Flakes put baseball cards in the cereal and tell them there are fifteen to collect and the kids might want fifteen so they’ll keep buying until they get them all. Another prize would be tattoos, kids might think they’re cooler just because they have a tattoo and it shows a bad example to them, that’s what I think. Sometimes they’ll just throw in a Hot Wheels car so kids will buy the cereal. This technique can really catch a kids eye.
To put commercials everywhere has a huge affect on consumers all over the world. The ads speak out to you saying buy me! Buying them won’t help you but it will help the person selling it to you, by giving them your money. I hope this showed you that advertisers can be very tricky and hopefully you won’t fall into their traps.
